1stdibs is a curated marketplace of the finest objects in the world — from furniture and fashion to jewelry, fine art and collectibles — from the world’s most notable dealers and galleries. They needed an app presence, but didn't know where to start. We worked with the 1stdibs mobile team to uncover the opportunity in mobile and create a rich, native mobile shopping experience.
We began our research phase by conducting stakeholder interviews to get a better understanding of the business’s priorities and goals for a native iOS shopping experience. After stakeholder interviews we conducted contextual inquiry interviews with dealers that sell on the 1stdibs platform to gather insights into their digital workflows and physical spaces. Based on our discussions, we created a 1stdibs shopper spectrum, personas and scenarios to describe a new native application shopping experience.
Armed with our insights we collaborated on a UX that made it easy for customers to personalize their shopping experience in order to quickly find meaningful and inspiring items. We also leveraged the phone's capabilities to support location specific experiences, opportunities to effortlessly communicate with dealers, and easily purchase items using Apple Pay.
Using the 1stdibs design system of brand colors, typefaces and photography, we created a clean contemporary app experience that prioritizes usability and legibility but still allows the customer to engage with the rich product photography. The result is an app that’s equally visually engaging and functional- meeting the needs of 1stdibs shoppers and dealers.
